Subdirectory

A subdirectory, in the context of websites, simply refers to the /path/ portion of the URL, after the domain.

Often there is a debate on whether it is better for SEO to have features such as a Blog, Forum, Support under a subdomain or a subdirectory.

Subdomains can seem easier to set up, since it’s done with your Name Servers, and usually has instructions for creating a CNAME for to turn 3rd-party URLs into branded subdomain URLs — but there is a way to do the same for subdirectories, using your web server http rewrite capabilities.

It is advantageous to use subdirectories for search engine optimisation of your site and content structure, as the full domain authority isn’t diluted across multiple domains and subdomains.
